nothing to say

I am on a course at the moment. As part of the course I have made a commitment to write six days a week. Either on this blog - or to write (wearing my comedy-teaching hat)  towards an article about working audiences through comedy. So here I am with a fresh post.  And I have nothing to say. Time for a favorite quote of mine, by the refreshing and inspiring John Cage: 'I have nothing to say/ and I am saying it/ and that is poetry/ as I need it.'

I have nothing to say when I take these photographs. And I take them. (And that is poetry /as I need it.)
I was fortunate to be encouraged over these last couple of years by a number of people. Posting the mages on Facebook turned from being a shot in the dark to becoming a dialogue. Just listen to the stunning way my friend Palfi writes (and thinks): 'Palestill colours; a step beyond pastel and a ghostly message from the grave painted by Clyfford Still with a haunting plea from the other side begging us to try to right some of the world's wrongs like someone trying to scream for help in a nightmare. Their mouth is wide open but they cannot make a sound.'

Artists kaleidoscope each other. Cage's music inspired Gerhard Richter to make his squeegee paintings. An act and an obliteration of an act. A something coming from a nothing.

A number of years ago I was not creating anything. I really had nothing to say, express or feel. It's good to walk in the desert. It's good to re-find trust. Even if that trust is in a shimmering nothing.

One of the pointers I give when I teach comedy is:  'the only failure is the failure to acknowledge the failure.' You have to let the audience know that you are aware of the interchange, that's there's a dialogue between you. Then you create (or fail to destroy) the magical thing that is in process between you. You and your audience. That thing that, though it enjoys words, needs no words, only recognition.

Just the process. The process is in process.
