Jacques Tati

Another expression of gratitude to my French boyfriend (see 'the indecisive moment' 23/11/2014). Tonight I am re-watching Jacques Tati's wonderful film Mon Oncle and looking at the scene where the guests at the luncheon party, due to a malfunction of the 'water feature' must move about the silly stepping stones in the over-designed garden carrying all the dining furniture with them, in search of dry footing.

First Tati gives an overview of the garden, then
has the camera shoot through the horizonals and verticals of the soul-less modern fence (shooting through things is a recurring theme I am drawn to see 'urban advent 19' @peta_lily - including regular creative camera tips.) Later in the film at M Hulot's brother-in-law's factory, an orange hose appears and embroiders its shape through a short scene that is  pure visual delight.

I am amazed as I watch how I hear the commentary my French boyfriend kept up during the film, all those years ago pointing out the wit, the assonances. Training my eye.

I thrill at this intersection of my comedy work and the creation of images – and I am intruiged to see how my eye was informed. See also the post 'Betty Blue' 15/11/2014. Hm, interesting that orange figures here too!

The moral of today's sermon? Look at good things. They leave imprints! And celebrate the joyful power of orange.
